Keeping your children safe around animals is very important. Here are some very simple tips to help ensure it.

Do not allow your child to ever run up on an animal, especially one you do not know. Animals can often feel threatened or surprised when this happens and there is the possibility that your child could get injured. Instead, teach your child to calmly approach from the front with their hand held palm down. Let the animal smell your child- s hand before petting it. If it is an animal you do not know, ask the owner if you may pet the dog or cat before doing so and respect the answer given, after all they know their pet the best.

Always supervise your child around animals. Even your own cat or dog can snap at or scratch your child inflicting unintended injury. If you have a pet in the house, allow them a quiet place where they can go and get away from all the activity, we all need a break now and than and your pet is no different. Teaching your child at a young age the proper respect and care for animals is important and can help keep them safe.
